Um lugar ao sol e Noite : a cidade em Erico Verissimo

Abstract

Este trabalho examina as representações de cidade em Um lugar ao sol (1936) e Noite (1954), obras de Erico Verissimo. Na primeira narrativa, a capital gaúcha, Porto Alegre, é retratada como um espaço dual: próspero nos bairros nobres e miserável nas periferias. Vasco Bruno, o protagonista, revolta-se com essa situação e, ao final da narrativa, decide deixar Porto Alegre. Em Noite (1954), nem a cidade, nem o protagonista têm nome. Este é designado por o Desconhecido ou homem de gris. Sem memória, o sujeito encontra-se destituído de identidade, o que o faz sentir-se um corpo estranho naquela sociedade, desencadeando o medo do protagonista. Durante o tempo de uma noite, o Desconhecido percorre uma cidade transgressora e, nela, revive fatos relacionados ao seu passado encobertos em seu inconsciente. O presente trabalho propõe fazer uma análise comparativa entre Um lugar ao sol e Noite, buscando compreender, por meio das representações de urbe e da trajetória que os sujeitos estabelecem nesta, qual das cidades é mais libertadora: a diurna, percorrida por Vasco Bruno; ou a noturna, do Desconhecido. Essa pesquisa escolheu como apoio bibliográfico as perspectivas teóricas de Walter Benjamin e Zygmunt Bauman acerca da vida nas cidades e de Georg Lukács quanto à problemática do herói romanesco.

This study intends to analyze the representantions of the city in Erico Verissimo´s novels “A place at the sun” and “Night”. In the first narrative, the state capital, Porto Alegre, is a dual space: prosperous neighborhoods and poor suburbs. Vasco Bruno, the protagonist, rebels against this situation and at the end of the novel decides to leave Porto Alegre. On the other hand, in “Night”, the city and the protagonist have no name. The character is called the Unknow Man or Man in Gray. Without memory, the man is devoid of an identify, wich makes him feel like an outsider, the consequence is the fear of the protagonist. During the night, the Unknown Man walks on a weird city and relives events from his past wich are hidden in his mind. This work intends to make a comparative analysis of “A place at the sun” and “Night”, includes seeking of the representations of the city and the trajectories of the men in them, wich city is more liberating: the solar city covered by Vasco Bruno; or the city at night. The theory used to support this study is the one by Walter Benjamin and Zygmunt Bauman regarding the urban life and Georg Lukács regarding the hero in the novel.
