This research analyzes discourses about mathematical education and the way in which they constitute the practices developed in this field of knowledge in deaf education as seen in documents such as the National Curriculum Guidelines, Political Pedagogical Projects and Study Plans of deaf schools in Porto Alegre/RS. The specific objectives of this research are: a) to analyze the National Curriculum Guidelines for Mathematics in the final grades of basic education, and b) to analyze discourses about mathematical education in school documents, such as Political-Pedagogical Projects and Study Plans for Mathematics teaching in the investigated schools. Ethnomathematics is seen from D’Ambrosio’s perspective (2013), which highlights that mathematical knowledges should be linked to social and cultural groups. Michel Foucault’s notion of discourse has been chosen as a theoreticalmethodological tool. According to Foucault, discourses produce practices. Other authors have also been considered, such as Viana and Barreto (2014), and Borges and Nogueira (2013) and Knijnik (2014), in order to think about mathematical education; Hall (2000) and Strobel (2008), who addressed identities and culture; and Costa (2011), among others, to think about curriculum, culture and power. The projects of three deaf schools were analyzed; the schools were assigned mathematical symbols to be identified as: α (alpha), β (beta) and γ (gamma), considering the order in which they accepted to participate in the survey. The three schools work with bilingual education and specifically assist deaf students, respecting and praising the deaf identities and culture in the school community. The methodology of the Political Pedagogical Projects of the analyzed schools is centered on sign language, and all the contents are worked with a focus on visual practices. From the repeated reading of the materials, three thematic groups were constructed: a) Mathematics for Citizenship: this unit presents excerpts from the materials stating that schools should work with “knowledges that are socially produced and acknowledged as necessary for exercising citizenship”; b) Curriculum Contents in Mathematics: the unit presents excerpts stating that schools should work with “contents within social and cultural contexts in which the students can develop mathematical skills, such as counting, calculating and interpreting social issues”; c) Methodologies, Resources and Evaluation Processes: the third unit presents excerpts stating that “methodologies, resources and evaluation should be articulated with cultural issues and centered on the Brazilian Sign Language” as well as on “cultural issues for the students to be able to develop calculation skills and appropriate mathematical knowledges”.en
