Bucket elevators are equipment used in agribusiness to transport bulk solids. They are divided into internal components and external structure, which is furher composed of elevator foot, leg and head. The structure has the function of supporting the weight of the equipment and isolating the dust of the bulk being moved from the external environment. Dust, when enclosed and under certain concentrations with oxygen, becomes highly flammable, so if ignition occurs, and the elevator is not prepared to withstand this type of accident, the structure might collapse catastrophically. There are national and international regulations to mitigate the risk of bulk explosion, and the structure must be dimensioned to withstand the pressures of deflagration. In this sense, three casing geometries of the elevator leg are studied using the finite element method and an attempt is made in order to understand how the critical pressure - pressure at the buckling limit of the structure - acts on the geometries and how it influences the capacity to withstand the compression of the structure weight. The analysis demonstrate that the difference between the faces of the rectangular section drastically reduces the capacity to withstand the deflagration, and present, at pressures of up to 50% of the critical pressure, little variation in the capacity to withstand compressive loads. ...
